3/5/07 -- Chelsea gets a new Markt
It may not look like the old Markt, but this weekend offered a taste of what's to come for the former Meatpacking brasserie.

Markt has started operating out of the 3,000-square-foot site of Sensa, a Mediterranean-style restaurant on Sixth Avenue and 21st Street in Chelsea, and patrons were able to order Markt's trademark grilled lobster for the first time since the restaurant was shut out of its 4,500-square-foot space at 401 West 14th Street on New Year's Day.

Last Thursday Markt took over Sensa's 13-year lease for an undisclosed sum.

While Sensa made a profit, "they weren't doing as well as expected," said James Famularo of New York Commercial Realty Services, the broker on the lease deal.

And although Markt was a Meatpacking fixture, Famularo said the move to Chelsea is likely to mean big business for the Belgian eatery.

"I think they're going to do phenomenal here," said Famularo.

Markt's management began operating out of the new location at the end of last week, and the restaurant began modifying Sensa's menu this weekend.

Beth Rogers, Markt's general manager, said she expects that Sensa will officially be renamed Markt within the next couple of weeks, but that the restaurant won't formally be unveiled as Markt until the end of the summer. By then, the new location will have been transformed into an old-fashioned brasserie, said Rogers, and the restaurant's full menu will be in place. By Lauren Elkies
