| The West Village is actually a sub-neighborhood of Greenwich Village. Since it's inception, it has been considered the center of the bohemian lifestyle in New York City. Though now, due to gentrification, it is not quite as hippie-esque, it still retains it's artistic charm with some galleries and artist's lofts. Recently, it became home to a section of The High Line, a new park which is built on top of an old elevated train track. The West Village is also home to The Meatpacking District, which is known worldwide as the home of the city's poshest and most exclusive nightclubs. Tourists and residents alike, while charmed by the cobblestone streets, are often confused by this neighborhood's "off-grid" design. The streets have names instead of numbers, and do not follow the logical grid format of most of the city. |
